Decorating homes in Annfield Plain
Annfield Plain grew up around coal mining and the railway, and its streets still reflect that past. Long rows of brick and stone terraces sit close to the town centre, with later council and private estates spreading out towards Catchgate, Greencroft and the Kyo villages. Many older terraces have been modernised over the years, so it is common to find a mix of original features, replacement windows and plasterboard alterations under the same roof.
The town sits on high, open ground between Stanley and Consett, and the weather here is noticeably harsher than in Newcastle. Wind-driven rain and cold winters are tough on outside paintwork, fascias and rendered gable ends, while older stone and brick walls can hold moisture. For masonry painting we use breathable products so walls can dry out, and we plan exterior work for the most settled part of the year, typically from late spring through summer.
Inside, older terraced homes often have uneven walls, cracked ceilings and alcoves either side of the chimney breast. These benefit from careful filling, sanding and sometimes lining paper before painting. Some damp-prone rooms, such as kitchens and back bedrooms against cold outside walls, are better suited to moisture-resistant paints, and we will point out anything that looks like an underlying damp issue rather than simply painting over it.
Plenty of homes in the area are rented, and landlords often need straightforward, hard-wearing redecoration between tenants. We can help with that, as well as owner-occupiers looking to refresh one room or the whole house.
